As the Indian River
guides you south along Florida’s east coast, the Ponce de Leon Inlet
Lighthouse points the way to some of the most unforgettable inland
fishing charters you will ever have. Mosquito Lagoon spans the
Indian River from New Smyrna Beach / Bethune Beach to Titusville,
and overlaps both
Canaveral National Seashore and
Merritt
Island National Wildlife Refuge. With 167,000 acres between
them, fishing in Mosquito Lagoon is great. It’s meandering tidal
flows, oyster bars, mangroves and grass-flats, create conditions for
some of the best fishing in east central Florida and the best
redfishing in the world!
Redfish and
spotted sea-trout are the primary target when site-fishing the
area.
Snook,
tarpon, grouper, tripletail,
black drum, ladyfish and a variety of other species are
available in many of the faster flowing passes and channels. Tailing
redfish take advantage of the
shoal grass (Halodule wrightii ) growing on shallow flats just
south of the fish camp; a site to behold for both novice and avid
anglers. Refuge to an amazing array wildlife this precious resource
provides an opportunity for fishing that is unmatched. North and
south along the length of Mosquito Lagoon, eco-systems vary with the
estuary’s conditions. New experiences abound and change with each
fishing charter and each season. Salinity level, water depth flow
and clarity all combine to create truly unique conditions found only
here in Mosquito Lagoon. For instance,
red mangrove and
spartina
(cord grass) exist here in the same eco-system, a rare meeting,
being the northern most extreme for the first and the southern most
extreme for the latter. It’s the Countless unique features like that
which make fishing in Mosquito Lagoon an experience of a lifetime.
Shallow and clear, with five types of sea grasses this slow moving
water provides and opportunity for site-fishing that is unmatched.
Fly-fisherman, spin-fishing and live-bait fisherman are all
challenged with scenarios that test their skills.
My name is Capt.
Joe Catigano and I’m lucky enough to call Mosquito Lagoon my office.
Oak Hill, my
home, is a wonderful old fisherman’s town located just north of the
John F. Kennedy Space Center on U.S. 1.
Volusia County’s
southern most city, Oak Hill is Just 30 Miles south of Daytona Beach
and 20 Miles North of Titusville and just 50 miles east of the
Orlando area. Several of its old fish camps that are accessible by
water still remain including: Goodrich Seafood, Lopez fish camp, and
Indian Mound Fish Camp.
JB's Fish Camp
in Bethune Beach is also accessible by water.
